Organizers of Toronto Caribbean Carnival Unveil Big Plans for 2024

The Festival Management Committee (FMC) for the Toronto Caribbean Carnival today unveiled plans for this year’s festivities at the Official Launch event held at Scarborough Town Centre. Celebrating its 57th year, North America’s largest celebration of Caribbean culture is set to return with significant transformative enhancements.


“We have been working very hard to make transformative changes to this year's carnival to position it as both a premier cultural showcase and a powerful business development platform,” said Jennifer Hirlehey, Executive Chair for the Board of Directors of the FMC. Addressing the thousands of carnival enthusiasts present, she added, “The FMC has made significant improvements over the last year including to stronger governance, increased board representation, and organizational changes for greater efficiency, 


Hirlehey also thanked the carnival’s supporters, including sponsors and government officials: “We are incredibly grateful to welcome our sponsors for this year, including (Diageo, MLSE, Grace Foods and OSSTF). Their invaluable contributions are essential to the success of the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, allowing us to host this vibrant celebration and showcase the rich heritage of Caribbean culture. We extend our heartfelt thanks for their continued commitment and partnership.”


Mischka Crichton, CEO of the FMC further made a call for members of the Caribbean Community to get more involved in the carnival. “As we prepare to showcase the very best of Caribbean culture and heritage, our success hinges on the support and participation of each and every one of you. Crichton encouraged members of the audience to volunteer for the carnival, become a vendor at the Caribbean markets or even become part of the Judging program. 


Crichton noted that participants can expect an expanded family experience at the Kiddies Carnival, new immersive pop-up experiences at all events, improved parade flow, and new VIP packages that include premium viewing areas.” She encouraged carnival lovers to visit the Toronto Carnival website for more information.


Speaking on behalf of the sponsors, Nadia Niccoli, Head of Marketing, Diageo Canada, stated, “We are excited to support the Toronto Caribbean Carnival this year. This festival not only celebrates the vibrant culture and rich traditions of the Caribbean but also provides a unique platform for us to connect with a diverse and engaged audience. Louis Saldenah, representing the mas bands leaders remarked, “This year’s enhancements reflect our dedication to providing an unforgettable experience for all attendees. The improvements in parade flow and logistics will make a significant difference.”


Meanwhile, Terrence Wilson of the Ontario Steelpan Association (OSA) added, “We are enthusiastic about the new immersive experiences and the focus on elevating the cultural aspects of the carnival. This will truly showcase the richness of our heritage. This increased commitment of the FMC of showcasing steelpan is amazing.”


Henry Gomez of the Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes (OPCA) noted that the cultural fabric of the carnival arts is in good hands”.
